Re: 89 olds cutlass supreme

One more thing I just discovered. THERE IS NO AIR FILTER IN THE FILTER BOX!!!! Could that have clogged some Injectors? Thanks!!!

?anyone know if this is possible? I dont know how air and fuel is mixed on these fuel injected cars. Im not sure if fuel and air is mixed before it goes through the injectors? Thanks

nope your intake plenum is just a bit dirtier from it.

Fuel filter keeps the injectors clean.
Speaking of clogged injectors I just fixed a 97 Suburban, had the original fuel filter with 148k on it, same symptom as you, runs fine at idle but try to move it and it just dies.

Good fuel pressure, changed fuel filter (old filter rattled, kinda weird ? needs investigating) same problem, truck has a lean code.
Chucked the filter can up in a lathe and cut it open to find the filter element was epoxied to the can and when the epoxy broke after 148k miles and 12 years all that crud went right to the "vortec spyder" injector, $350 dollars for the injector and $100 to me and the truck ran properly again.
This diagnosis was a piece of cake and was the first "broken" fuel filter I have seen.

Re: 89 olds cutlass supreme

I changed the fuel filter. That was the first thing I did cause when the car stopped it acted like it was out of gas. Now there is a lot of weird things going on. Im not sure what to do. I will not get the title until the 24th so I do not want to throw too much money at it til I secure the title for the car(it was kinda shysty how the seller sold me the car, I had to track down the owner before the guy I bought the car from). But THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH FOR ANY HELP!!!!!

Re: 89 olds cutlass supreme

ok guys Im not all that sure that the fuel pump is the problem and im not sure that I want to chase down any flash codes. I did not do much with the car in the last week and a half cause I was not sure about the title. Now Im pretty sure I have that settled so... I'm off work today so I was outside trying to diagnose problem. I DO hear the fuel pump hum for the 2 seconds when I turn the key to the "on" position and it sounds normal. I can start the car and it will Idle. Today I ran the car up and down the street and it ran perfect. I park in the driveway and now 3 hours later I start it up and I cannot get it to rev up past Idle speed It just dies as soon as I touch the gas. I am really confused!! It ran very strong so I cannot see it only running on only 3 cylinders. Now that it will only idle I left it run and pulled the fuse in the picture below #1 and there is no change in how it runs with the fuse out. I replaced the fuse and pulled #2 and It dies right away. I understand by reading that both of those fuses are for the fuel injectors 1 is for 3 cylinders and 2 is for the other 3 cylinders. So Im not sure where to go from here? Can someone help me? Thanks!!!!!!

Re: 89 olds cutlass supreme

DrewMitch44,
A friend of mine had a similar issue with his 2000, Chvy Venture minivan where it would run great for a few days then all of a sudden die on him and would not crank then a few days later it would run great. It was a hit or miss thing so I looked at it and thought that the van had a bad fuel pump becuase it would not pump fuel out of the main fule line when the key was tuened on and the battery fully charged up. So he oredered a new fule pump I put it in and thought he was fixed and it ran great for about a week and then happned again so he actaully took it in and what they found was a bad wiring harness running from the fuel pump to the front of the van so it was repkaced and he hasn't had anymore issues with it for a while now. So check your wire harness were it plugs in to the top of your fuel pump and look for brown/black burning wires especailly at the connector his was on the big white square connector that has, I believe, about 12 wires running into it and plugged into the bottom of the floor board underneath on the van. That might be wrong with yours but you want know that until you crawl underneath the van and look at all your plug in connections comming from the fule pump including the plug at the fuel pump. Hopefully that is all that is wrong with yours you have a bad wire harness. Let us know, Bob
