Stumbled across a maybe good deal. Not really "looking" to repower the boat....that is, if I ever get it done....but hey, if the price is right, and the power is right, why not?

Ok, I found an 89 Evinrude 50, he says it's got low compression in one cyl. But the lower end is good, as are most the other parts. He's asking 650, but I don't think I'd be willing to pay anything over 500.

If everything else checks out decent, is that a good price? And how easy are these to fix? I currently have an 88 Johnson 30, and I know they are almost the same, but I've only done little things to the Johnny. Nothing big. Though I do work on cars for a living, so a boat motor can't be that hard. :)

boat motors are a lot different than cars especially because they are 2 cycle. The low compression could just be a bad head gasket. If you can pull the head, it's only a few bolts, make sure that the cylinders aren't scored. The lower unit if you know for sure it is good can be sold for 6 or 7 hundred. It might make a good engine on it's own if you figure out why it has low compression in that cylinder

he says it's got low compression in one cyl.

What does he mean by "low"? Bring a compression gauge with you.

I'd ask a bunch of questions before wasting your time.

I wouldn't bother looking at it unless the seller confirms that he would accept your $500 offer(assuming you like the motor).
