I have a 89 model 85hp Cabrea made by suzuki model number EL85P (same thing as the DT85). I recently bought the motor after it had been setting for nearly 3 years. Ran a compression check and all three cylinders seem to be decent. Trouble is the motor won't run wide open, not even close at about 1/4 throttle it seems to run out of gas. I've been through the carbs, went through the fuel pump, checked for vacuum leaks. I bypassed the onboard fuel tank and tried running it from a fuel tank I use on my other boats to ensure its not a tank or fitting problem. Same story. I can only find 1 adjustment screw on each carb and that's the rich-lean adjustment screw. With all carbs running as rich as possible and the choke butterflies closed it runs better which makes me think I've got an air leak somewhere. I've checked all gaskets on carbs and vacuum hoses. Can someone tell me what I'm missing here. I've got alot of money in this setup and hate to dump a bunch more at the dealer. Is there another adjustment screw somewhere on these carbs to get more fuel? Thanks for any help

Something Else I forgot to add above. The motor idles fine but when you try to take off it revs up to nearly wide open but before getting on plane it falls on its face. If you cut the throttle back to idle as soon as it falls on its face it will continue to idle again however if you just hold the throttle open it will die immediately. Thanks

Souds a bit like a leaking crank shaft seal. In the normal slow running without the choke closed pull the end cylinder plug wires off, one at a time, and see if the revs drop with one or the other cylinder disconnected. I f the revs dont drop then chances are you have a bad seal. This means a motor tear down.

hello, i just read your post and it seems as if your problems may be close to mine. my engine runs great out of the water, but as soon as i put it in the water under a load it cuts back to about 3200 rpm, willnot go over say about 10-15 mph, and fuel leaks out everywhere from the prop area. same as you, my compression is great and mechanically everything is very sound, i am very confused! my friend did tell me that it sounds to him like a definite power pack issue! the only problem with that is that i cant find the power pack anywhere and even if i did, thats a faily costly guess if its not right, and you cant just return electrical parts. tell you what ill do, if i hear anything else ill get with you, and please do the same for me. thanks an good luck with your motor. marcus

make sure the timing is advancing.
if the timing advances and you have spark on all 3
you might have an vacuum problem.
did you check the fuel pressure when you go wide open just before it falls flat?
