Hi guys,

New boat owner...new user...new all around. I love the information I have been reading on here, so this is the first place I came when I had a question.

I have a 15hp suzuki that I got for $300 on craigslist. When I bought the motor the guy told me the lower unit had problems, and he showed me where it was busted up. I accepted the damage for the price, because the motor seemed to run great.

I have it on a 12 ft V-hull jon boat, and it pushes me and my 11 year old son a solid 20 mph...with a busted prop (new one on the way). So, it runs great.

To cut to the chase - here are some pictures of the damage to the lower unit that I have in question. (QUESTIONS BELOW PICTURES)

Ok, so my questions are:

1. How much longer do I have to run on this? I just take it out on a lake...and don't go further than I would want to row back...so...

2. Is it worth fixing?

3. How bad is the oil situation that is running down the side? I just noticed this. It is not wet oil that is actively there...but it is residue...from it being there recently.

I appreciate any input you guys can offer.

Since you are eager for an opinion, mine is that you got taken. In that condition the engine is worth $0.00.

lakensea - Thanks for the reply and your opinion. However, I would like to debunk your opinion. It's impossible that the engine is worth nothing. I have had it for 2 months...taken it out at least 3 times a weekend. That in itself, was worth the $300.00 I paid for it...and it continues to run. So, I don't see how it is worth nothing...

But that is your opinion...

Since you're not going far on the lake with this motor and it's running O.K. and you're enjoying it then just enjoy it as long as possible. I doubt that welding/repairs would be a viable option....in the mean time maybe begin a search for a decent used lower unit to replace this one with when it finally dies. Replacement of the lower unit is a quick and easy process and hopefully you can find a fairly decent used one....maybe on line?.....Good Luck!

Robert,
Thanks for the reply! I will definitely keep my eye out for a used lower unit. I appreciate the reassuring comments - happy boating!

Mr. Graham,
I read on some other posts that you live around Jacksonville, FL? I am near Apopka, enjoying the Harris Chain of Lakes in Lake county.
