Yes

Yes

Judicious use of heat on the steering tube will usually liquefy the grease enough to allow the removal of the cable.

TG is correct. Regardless of motor -- Tohatsu or other, the push-pull "teleflex-style" cables come apart that way. You may (or may not) have success re-lubricating the cable, or you may end up replacing the cable. Once you get the cable working correctly, keep it well-lubricated to help prevent this condition in the future.

Paul,

Have you ever tried using that odd injector pump that they made/make for steering cables? I bought one for the shop 30 years ago, but we never had any success with it due to the salt in the cables. I was just wondering if they worked in a fresh environment.

Elvin,

Never used that injector. But I have used the air-powered grease guns that are marketed to tractor-trailer garages and industrial equipment shops. They are a pneumatic pump that drops into a 35-gal. drum of grease. As long as there's a good zerk fitting, they work wonders. Sometimes still needs heat. I have even blown cheap zerks apart with one. Might work on a salty cable.

The other trick we do is to use a good hand grease gun with a pipe -- not a hose. The hose sometimes is too elastic to deliver maximum pressure to the zerk.

We have tried the HD air guns without any success on salty cables....Of course, the cables are so cheap today that spending the time even trying isn't worth it:)
