My first ride in my 89 Searay 4.3 was great. When I go into fwd I get a slight click then a mild clunk and I'm in fwd. When I go into reverse I get more clicking and goes into reverse after a tad more loud clunk.
but then...after 2 or 3 reverses it only clicks and no reverse. Sounds like gear cable adjustment

I found tons of videos on adjusting but before I do the whole thing can someone make a suggestion.
Some reason I am afraid to adjust the cable to benefit reverse and thinking it will hurt fwd. Should I do the complete alignment F N R on the cable or because it's just the reverse is there a more minor adjustment I can make.. For example there is some movable stud.

both cables have been replaced since new...maybe 10 years ago.

Are you easing the lever out of neutral into gear? Use a firm, fairly quick motion out of neutral into FWD and REV. Easing will grind the gears, so try speeding up shifting.

Thanks alot. I will check many things out in that manual. And yes it is possible I was easing into gear. Once I heard it grind (after it worked few minutes prior) I was hesitant to "jam" it in. I can kind of see how going slow could cause a binding. I may troubleshoot the prop outside water to see what happens when I shift and feel the prop engage. I thought I read some reason that can be bad?? I will do it gently.

one more thing. If being trimmed or tilted nealy out of water...will that have an effect on shifting. Thx.

I did confirm though Rev will not engage sitting on trailer. Fwd and N does

Sorry for the replys. Forget what I said above. I watched a few videos and followed the manual best I could. I made an improvement with reverse catching in gear. Although it did require me to move the remote cable stud all the way up. But while it locks more than it has before, I still can break the prop free every 3 or 4 turns. Only for reverse. I know while the motor running is a different story. Should I consider adjusting the barrel a tad further (than the 6") to get further reverse engagement? I don't know enough of the actual clutch and gears to picture what's actually going on in there.
