I am going to look at this boat next week. Pictures look like it is in great shape, but pictures don't tell the all the truth. I have only owned 1 boat and it is a '79 w/Alpha 350 GM. I have done significant repairs on the outdrive and gimbal. Looking to move to a newer year, a little smaller and I feel I would use the ski and fish more often. I have started to get into bass fishing. The cuddy I have is not very friendly for fishing in shallow waters, but rides great in high wind and rough water.
I am looking for some expert advise on how to look over the motor because that is mainly what I am buying. I have not had an outboard before. I will be pouring over the hull very closely looking for fractures/damage/soft spots, etc.
Is this vintage of Johnson good quality? Known problems to look for? I am guessing is is 2 cycle but don't know if it is oil injection as yet.
I also don't much about the pros and cons or differences in handling between a 'shallow' V hull vs. a 'deep' V like I have now. I can handle 3-4' waves with no problem now. I have even gone through waves where they wash onto the top of the cuddy after the bow goes under water. Big windy day that was! Watched a hose boat lift a 'toon out of the water by the loading ramp! Lucky they didn't tip over.
Using in fresh water only, boat accessible mountain lakes. Lake Powell is the only one where boat traffic and weather would cause big rough water.
