89 yamaha short causing boat to idle.

Hopefully a simple question,

Can a short in the remote control wires cause the overheat alarm to go off and shut motor down to idle. I get very quick beeps if I lift up on remote control wires.

Problem is solved. Mice chewed up the wires causing the boat to short and give a false overheat alarm, only allowing the boat to idle.
