898 mercruiser

I started to get ready for the warm weather by getting my boat ready only to find that I have a cracked block and manifolds. I have a 1983 Celebrity with a 898 Mercruiser engine(GM 305). I heard that it would be best to upgrade to the 350 instead of rebuilding my current engine. <br /><br />I was wondering, does all of my 305 external parts bolt up on 350 without having to do any modifications. Also, I was told that I would need to change the gears in stern unit, what would you recommend?<br /><br />Would it be cheaper to just find a remanufactured engine or could I just get block and find parts for it?<br /><br />Any help would be appreciated!<br /><br />John

Ayuh,......... SBCs are All the same, on the Outside.... All the Bolt Holes will be where they Need to be....<br />As Long as the motors are of the Same Vintage...........<br /><br />The Outdrive Ratio Should already be a 1.50/1.... That's Merc.'s V8 ratio.......Nothing to Change there........<br />You'll Probably need a Bigger Prop, with the Extra Horsepower......<br />

That's a Personal Choice........<br />I prefer to Know My Machinest,.. Personally......<br />I'm Lucky that there's 2 Great MachineShops here locally,.. Both do Quality Work, as per My Instructions........

When you make the change, a Edelbrock marine carb will save a little money over OEM and is a great carb--Bob

If you build the motor yourself (or have someone build it) make sure to have all the internal moving parts speed balanced. You will not be sorry. Best $120.00 I ever spent.
