Updating my kicker motor for a 24' fiberglas with a hardtop and doors, 8' beam , v8 I/O. Total weight unknown. Had a Yamaha 9.9 high thrust. Both Yamaha dealers I've been to are pushing me towards the 8 hp highthrust. Going to a 12ci motor from a 20ci motor for a fairly heavy boat sounds like it might be a bad idea. The previous 9.9 would push the boat up to about 6mph. BTW both dealers had the 8 in stock but not the 9.9! Maybe they would let me test one on the boat. I've never bought an outboard conditionally before. Any comments or helpful suggestions would be appreciated.

All I can say is that everybody in our part of the world loves the Yamaha 8s for kickers, even on boats that size, that's why they're in stock.<br />It would be nice to try one first though.

My neighbor has a four stroke Yamaha 8hp (regular) on a tinny. Very quiet, smooth, and smoke free, but a dog next to the 9.9 Johnson 2 stroke they have.

As far as the speed goes - it could be that you are running into the hull speed for your particular boat and the 8 and the 9.9 will push it the same speed. I don't know that, but just suggesting it. I'm a cynic, but part of me is suspicious that they are steering you towards an engine they have in stock. However, it might be just fine and save you some money and weight. I think your idea of testing it is a good one if they will let you. Let us know what you find out.
