Just a quick question, are the 9.9 & 9.5 Johnson and Evinrudes the same motor? Are the 9.5 just as good as the 9.9?
Thanks

Re: 9.5 & 9.9 Johnson and Evinrude

A 9.9 is a 9.9 and the 9.5 is a 9.5 when it comes to Johnson and Evinrude. I think that holds true up to say the 90's for the 9.9 and I'm not certain after that. Both are great motors but if I were to have just one it would be the 9.9. the 9.5 last year of manufacture was 1973 and the 9.9 replaced it starting in 1974. The 9.9 (IMO) seems much more powerful and gives better fuel economy. Parts are more plentiful as well. The 9.5 has a different look which I really like but I sold my 9.5 due to extreme lack of use as I would reach for the 9.9 every time out. Best of luck. Rick.

As good as the 9.5s were, the 9.9s that replaced them were a much better motor. When they went to a full CD ignition by the latter 1970s, they were very good.

9.9's from '74+ were actually 'de-tuned' 15's (and same weight). So they're quite a bit heavier than 9.5's produced from '64 - '73.

Thanks for all your help, Kbait is it hard to turn a 9.9 into a 15?

I have a '73 9.5 (bought new) and for what its worth, have only replaced L/U oil and spark plugs. Starts second or third pull every time. I also have a '78 15hp. The 9.5 looks to be much more difficult to work on, but I haven't had to!

Yea, the 9.5's are a tough one to work on. Especially when the lower rubber boot goes bad and you have to pull the entire shrouding apart. I did a couple of those in one weekend and talk about total surgery. Yikes. The 9.9's were a completely different animal and actually were easier to work on. The earlier 9.5's were basically the first design of low profile motors from Johny/Rude. Nice when they run good, but tough as heck to work on.
