Hi all, I have a 9.5 evenrude sport twin and cant seem to get the carb to prime when i squeeze the ball it just pumps air and fuel into the carb and the fuel comes out a small port on the top of the carb by the choke. any Idea what may be causing this.

Water logged float or a stuck needle. I had the same thing with my 73 - 9.5. Cleaned the carb and put a new kit in it and it was as good as gold. Best of luck. Rick.

Hummm ive tryed a couple different needles and floats and seems to have the same outcome just dosnt prime or let the tank bulb go firm and i have clear lines and can just see air going threw them and when it does get fuel it pees out that hole threw the top of the car should there be something in that hole?

Re: 9.5 evenrude carb

I think the hole is a vent although I'm not 100% sure but fuel was pouring out of it on mine. Is there anyway you could have put the float on upside down. If you can keep hand pumping fuel into the carb. it is because the needle/seat/float isn't shutting off the flow when the carb. is full. Could be something is hanging up the float as well but I can't imagine what it could be. You should check all your connections from tank to carb. but I've had good running motors and seen air in the fuel line from the pump to carb. Seems like once the air is in there it is entrapped but doesn't affect the flow of fuel. It just keeps allowing the fuel to go by and the air keeps trying to stay at the high point which is exactly what I would expect in a low flow situation. A small outboard is IMO a low flow situation for sure. Rick.

you should have a suction type choke on that motot (air restric flap) pump the hose bulb just to feel light restriction pull ckoke and try to start motor, as soon as motor starts push choke in, if motor dies before choke is pushed in try to start with choke push in. you should also try lifting your tank higher than the motor and see if it will run via gravity feed.

Ok so Ive put a new carb kit in this beast new needle it runs but it does not run well looking into it ive made sure all ports are clean and when i hook my parts cleaner nozzel to them i can see great fuel flo however when the carb is put back together and the needle is out 1 1/4 turns but when the high spped it to kick in it dosnt look like anything comes out of the brass nozzleand when i accelerat its sluggish and misses alot could this be from low compression or bad spark in one cylinder ?

Pop the flywheel off and have a look at the coils and points. I bought 2 of these motors last summer and the coils were cracked on both of them. The parts are available just about anywhere and are not too expensive. both of mine were treated to new coils, points and condensers and now they run like new.
