I just got a 9.5 Evinrude model 9222M. It is a 1972 motor. I don't know any of the history of the motor but it looks good.
I am trying to get it running. But I don't have a gas tank. Does this model need just a one line tank?
The engine turns over alright but when I turn it over with the plugs out I have gotten some water to come out. Any sugestions?

Is the water coming out of the spark plug holes? If so, you'll have to pull the head and replace the head gasket, at a minimum.

As for the tank, yes, a single hose tank is the right one, with normal OMC fittings.

I have not checked compression with a gauge but it seems good based on pulling with the plugs in. Would I get this with a bad gasket?
Pulling the head and maybe more is something I would like to avoid if I can. If not I need to get to work so I can enjoy it.
Thanks for sharing your expertise.
A site like this is a great learning experience.

get a tank and hose and see if she will run. it sounds weird that u are getting water out of the plug holes already without running the motor. are u sure its water ? was the motor sitting outside ? walmart sells the hose and fuel tank pretty cheap might wanna check them out.

Re: 9.5 Evinrude Fastwin

I think the head gasket may have been right. It was much less work to pull the head than I anticipated. First time I have worked on an outboard.
Compression was 45 and 50 psi. I don't know what it is supposed to be but my guess is much higher.
The moisture got in the cylinders from sitting on its side I am guessing. Most of it resulted when I had the engine laying on it's back with the plugs out. I would pull the starter cord and after a few tries I would find water dripping out.
Pistons look good but have carbon deposits.
Ill replace the head gasket and get a tank and hose. If I am not in business, I'll be back posting.

Thanks for your advice. It makes this project much easier.
