1972 Evinrude 9.5 HP, Model 9222

There is a small hole, about 3/16 inch diameter, in the underside (bottom) of the cavitation plate above the prop. The hole is offset about 3/8 inch to the right of center.

After running the motor in a garbage can of water yesterday, some (a little - drops) oily moisture leaked out overnight as the motor set upright on a motor stand.

I can only guess it's a drain hole from the exhaust cavity.

Is the hole supposed to be there?
What's it for?

Thanks,

I would say you are correct. It's a drain hole. Same hole on my '57Rude 5.5hp. I guess they didn't change much. An oily leakage from this hole is due to unburned fuel/oil mixture, especially notable after periods of slow running.

Thanks,
I thought that's what it must be - but just wanted another opinion.

No, I don't think they changed much for a lot of years.

Thanks again,
