I have a 9.5 and the last time I had it out it wanted to stall out unless I pumped the bulb on the fuel line so I think my fuel pump needs replaced. Since it was the end of season I pull out my chrysler 6hp and used it and noticed that it moved my boat as fast if not faster than my 9.5 do you think this is because the fuel pump was going or do you think I have some other problem?

Thanks
Bill

Re: 9.5 fuel pump ?

You might want to try replacing the o-ring in the fuel line connector first, or try someone elses fuel line. If the fitting is leaking air, it'll make your engine run badly. Pressurizing it with the bulb will keep the air from getting sucked in. If your lucky, this might be your problem.
Poor performance might be caused by lots of things. Try removing one of the spark plug wires and see how it runs. This'll tell if one cylinder isn't fireing. If your 9.5's carburator has adjustable mixture, (particulairly high speed) try setting it.
Is the throttle plate opening all the way?
Have you checked your compression?
How does it start/idle? Well or bad?

I hope this helps!

I have both motors setup to run on the same fuel line connection.
The motor starts on the first pull and runs great but the bulb gets soft and it starts to die until you pump the bulb. I never noticed the loss of power until I put my 6 hp on it does seem to be running on both cylinders but I have not checked the compression but I will

Thanks
Bill

Re: 9.5 fuel pump ?

It sure sounds like you've got a fuel pump problem then.

The 9.5 is not the strongest engines out there as far as OMCs go, but I think it should beat a 6hp Chrysler when it's all tuned up. Unless it's really worn out. Like under 90 psi per cylinder worn out.
One last (longshot) idea on the power loss - Does it run much better with the cowling off?
