Hi,
I have a 1965 9.5hp Johnson. At idling speed it coughs and kicks a few times then dies. What would be causing this?

Sounds like it's running to lean at idle speeds Tony. Turn the low speed needle out and see if that helps...maybe 1/4 to a 1/2 turn to start.

have the same problem, turns and turns the low-speed-knob out, doesnt help much. Tried to change the plugs, runs pretty ok at idle (coughs a little), but after an hour on those the coughing and kicking is back

i guess it could be. it could be alot of things but even the manual says that u cant get a good tune on the engine in a tank without a test prop and the right conditions. i replace my points and condencers every 4 seasons and clean and adjusted them every 2 seasons

Wayne.....henning has a good point. Quick way to check spark, put a cut off nail in the spark plug wire an set it about 7/16" from a clean engine ground. The spark should be a hot white strong spark. Try this for both leads. No spark means possibly new points or coils.

Weak spark will cause the engine to idle bad at low speeds.

runned it at the water on my 10ft. boat. Started it up, started at first pull ( trottle at "start"). The idle speed adjustment are sat at "slow" (lower makes it die). setting it to "slow" make it coughs and kicks a few times then dies. Starts it again (it is warm, but have to use choke). Then shifts and setts trottle wide in a couple of minutes, but at idle it coughs again and stopps. Starts it again, turns the lowspeed knob 15 times, but no result....HELPHELPHELP, no dirt in float chamber, spark is good

Guys!! We gotta get this thread sorted out. Tony was the original poster for a problem. Now we got henning and Wayne in here. I even got mixed up. Please post your problems in a separated thread.
