Ive got a 1969 johnson 9.5hp that I am working on restoring. I have replaced the, coils, rebuilt carb and set the points. I got it to run today, but I noticed it was not wanting to stay at a slow speed and when it would, it would sputter and die. Also, the greater of my concern, the water that it is spitting out is quite HOT! :flame: I am running j8c plugs which is what I bought the motor with, but was thinking of replacing them with either j6c or j4c. Any suggestions on these problems? Thanks!

I think mine all have j6c plugs in them, have you replaced the impeller? If its been awhile you should drop the lower unit replace the impeller and do a good inspection of the pump plate & housing. pay close attention to the center of the plate, look for scoring there and grooves worn in the plate surface. great old motors.

No. The impeller has not yet been changed. I just bought it a week ago. How do i drop the lower unit after I unscrew the four bolts on the outside? Do I have to pull the head like with the older motors?

loosen the lower unit bolts, shift into reverse, the unit should drop down about a inch or so, then take out the bolt that connects the shift linkage. thats about it

Ok. I dropped the lower unit and checked the impeller. It's bendy flexible and seems almost new. No particles or anything weird in the housing. There are some grooves but its nothing bad. It is pumping water pretty good. Cleared the meshing on the bottom close to the prop which wasn't too bad. Thanks for that link! I checked the temperature of the back of the plate where the plugs go in and it read 200 degrees for both cylinders. On the top of the cylinder housing it read 150. Does this sound right or is it still too hot? When I had the lower unit off, I also blasted the tube that the water goes up and it seems to be pretty clear. Other than that she's running pretty good!

Sounds like your t-stat is stuck closed.

Ran it a second time, this time a bit higher out of the bucket with more water in it and I noticed that a whole bunch of vapor was coming out of the pee hole like the exhaust when a car is started on a cold morning. What would the t-stat have to do with this? (not trying to be rude) Is it possible that it has gone bad or stuck closed? How do you fix that?

I have attached some images of my thermostat. Not sure how it is supposed to look. It appears to be made of copper and it takes quite a bit of pressure to get the spring to go down.
