I have a 68 Johnson 9.5 on my little duck boat and the very bottom piece of the lower unit cracked during the summer when I was out just running it and hit a rock so it drained all of the oil out. I have a 64 that's a parts motor so I took the bottom piece off of the lower unit of it and it looked a little different but everything lined up so I didn't think anything of it. Well fast forward and now the motor doesn't want to stay in forward or reverse. Reverse at all and forward if I give it more than idle throttle. Is there a different where the little arm connects down on that bottom section to change gears or is this a different problem? Thanks in advance for any help

That lower unit is machined when the 2 parts are assembled.----Technically the lower part does not interchange.----But all parts should be in the correct position--Best is to do a complete inspection of all the parts.------Was it run with water in the oil ??

How did the gears and dog look when you inspected? How did it look different?

Well I drained the lower unit oil today and there was water mixed with the oil after only 2 trips. I inspected the gears and dog of both and the 68 has had the water take its toll. I ordered a seal kit and new impeller for the lower unit of the 64 motor and am going to put all new seals in it since I know it is in good functioning shape gear and dog wise and put that lower unit on the 68 motor. Thanks for the replies.
