9.5 Seahorse Won't start

Hello all, I'm new to the forum and a first-time boater. I recently purchased a boat with a '65 9.5 Johnson Seahorse. Took it out on the lake and it ran like a champ. Ran it for about 10 minutes. Shut here down, trolled a bit. Then I tried to restart the motor, but I couldn't get the throttle to turn to the start position in neutral. I could only get the throttle to the start position in Forward or reverse. By start position, I mean there's a red dot on the throttle that aligns with Stop, Shift, Start, Fast, Slow. Of course the motor will only start in neutral with the dot aligned at Start. But as I said before, when I try to turn throttle to start while in neutral it won't turn that far. Anyone had this experience before? Thanks.

Re: 9.5 Seahorse Won't start

Maybe it's my inexperience or by dumb luck. I lifted the cover and noticed lots of interference with the throttle and the transmission. (I assume this is the proper nomelclature). But basically there's a very small window for the throttle to slide in the start posistion while the motor is in neutral. Has anyone else experience this or have I got a bad mote. Also, I tried to find the service manual for the MQ-11 9.5 Hp, but I all I found were for manuals for model numbers that started with the number nine. Any advice on the manual?
Thanks for our help.

There is a possibility that your tiller gears are out of alignment. In neutral the tiller should only go up to the start position or slightly past start position. Because they may be out of alignment this would only allow you part of the way. Not allowing the cam to advance enough to produce a spark. When the motor is in gear (Forward )it allows the cam to advance more and then you are able to turn the tiller handle to the start position and thus start the motor. (I wish a had a pictures of the throttle mech as to explain better.

Well that is my opinion, but I just started fixing my own motors about year ago, but have pick up some good experience from listening to some of the experience guys and reading.

I'm sure one of the experienced 9.5hp guys will chime in hopefully.

I got 2 (9.5hp outboard motors 1965 model and 1971 model)

Hope you resolve your issue soon and back to fishing.

Never mind the dots. These old throttles are just too loose for that. Back your throttle off all the way, put your shifter in neutral and then give it all the throttle it will allow and that is your start position. Have you performed a linc. and sinc. and have you checked for spark with a gap tester? Ezeke is my 9.5 hero and hopefully he will see your post and have a more informed trouble shooting plan than I. Best of luck. Rick.

Rick,

You were right on the money about ignoring the dots. I took the motor to a shade tree mechanic I found on craigslist(Hey, it was worth the adventure) . His shop, I'm pretty sure, is a meth lab. Well he didn't finish when he promised so I went to to his meth lab, er uh, I mean "shop" and brought my engine back in pieces. I put it back together and followed your advice. It starts like a champ. Taking it out...again tomorrow. Stay tuned....and say no to meth!
