Re: 9.8 merc impeller change.wont go into gear.
I just changed out my impeller and the manual said to make sure the control lever and gearcase are in "forward" prior to re-installing the lower unit. I'm not sure why, but I suspect it's to make sure it's aligned right. Does the motor shift into reverse when the shifter indicates neutral?
