9.8 merc stuck in rev

dont know what happened but. i replaced my shifter arm on my 1974 merc #110 9.8 .{was broken off} put it on then shifted it from neutral to "rev" engine (not running) now its stuck in REV. took off the new arm still wont shift??? i did see that a plastic rod with a ball on the top end from the lower unit on front side out side if the unit to the shallow water hinge ? was not hooked up put it back on. no luck still in REV. somthing i'm over looking? it worked fine B4 i put new arm on .

did you try spinning the prop when shifting.

yep tried turning prop while tring to shift it. did not work. did a search and seen that it might need to be running to get it out of REV ? shifted ok with engine not running B4. lower unit was rebuilt 7 yr ago. used 2 times after that then sat for 6-7 yrs. till i bought it boat, motor, trailer. i have not tried to start it yet. did spray carb cleaner in carb. later pulled on rope to turn engine over for shifter troubles and HA HA it ran on the carb cleaner only for 3-4 seconds. yep it got spark. the trottle is a bit tight to turn. thinking that might be from sitting for a while.

I believe that advice is for electric shift models. There are some Merc gurus on here that can help more, but most are probably boating this weekend.

any one else have any idea ? the lever is past the indent for REV. darn plastic rod poped off again too. :mad:
