9.8 Mercury 2 stroke stator burns out

A fellow boater has a Mercury 9.8, He told me every 6 mounths of use or so, the stator goes bad, "burns out", and he has to change it, I can't think of anything right off hand, does anyone know what might cause this?

That's very doubtful there are 3 or 4 different systems do you know the system, serial number or year?

It may take me a couple of days to get s/n or year of motor.

wires coming out of a stator corrode more on some engines than others. When these wires wear down the can short against the engine and burn it out. has he been bying NEW stators or used stators to replace them? black tape helps protect the wires from HEAT and wear at the stator wire outlet. this could be one reason

Some of the stators, State right on them, to NEVER shut off the engine with the Kill switch while the motor is connected to motor muffs, or a flushing system, For whatever reason it will back feed and burn out the stator, They (CDI electronics) Recomend only using the Choke to kill the engine. But it ok to use the stop switch while the engine is submerged in water.... Guess they are very sensative to this.

That's the 1970/72 or stator #s listed below here's the reason.

Quite simple- backpressure. On muffs there is none, in the lake all kinds.
