I just obtained an older 9.8 mercury outboard. I have two questions. (1) How much water should exit when the motor is running and where does it exit? I have cleaned the carb will but it will run for about 15 seconds and quit. Any suggestion. Thanks

There should be a water exit for the pee hole just to the left (as you look toward the transom from inside the boat) in the rear part of the motor just below the cowling. You should be able to see it. I used to have one of those motors, and it was always clogging with salt and I always had to have a paperclip with me to open it up after sitting. You should have a steady stream.

As far as dieing after 15 seconds, it sounds like you have a fuel delivery problem of some sort. Check for the tank vent open, and all hoses and connections from tank to carb, and then possibly the fuel pump.

Good Luck

John

Thank for the info. Still don't find any other numbers on the engine or housing. I have cheched the filter, checked the fuel pump, even ran it with a full bowl of fuel, still dies at 10 seconds.

You have a fuel problem somewhere. Check the choke and the choke linkage, and make sure the choke is engaging when pulled out, and not engaged when it is pushed in. Your problem could be caused both by too much fuel, or not enough fuel.
After it dies, are the plugs wet?

Numbers; Look for a 1" or so alluminum cap. It looks like a freeze plug on the block. There is a number stamped into this silver cap, and that is the serial number.
There is also a tag on the transom clamp, but they don't allways hold up well.
It may have been removed on purpose too--- oy!

Yes, fuel delivery, iether internal carb,fuel pump,or air leak in vacum line.
Try this;
Get a 409 or windex bottle,clean it, and put some mixed gas in it. Spray a bit directly into the carb. If it runs until it runs out of gas, it is fuel related.
