I have a 9.9 that the water coming out of the pee hole is hot. I don't think this is normal. Can anyone shed some light on this?

Paul

It shouldn't be real hot. The peehole comes from the bottom of the exhaust cover which is where the water enters the powerhead. It dosn't normally have time to get very hot. The exhaust covers have some small passages under the gaskets and they may need cleaning out to improve water flow. They tend to get clogged with deposits, particularly if you run in salt water. It's a good idea to clean them out periodically anyway. You will need new gaskets.
Of course, if your whole powerhead is overheating, it can warm the peehole water up pretty fast and get it hot. You may want to take a look at the waterpump.

The water pump was new last year. I water will not burn you but it is more then warm. Do you have to remove the powerhead to clean these passages?

There are two exhaust cover plates, the inner and the outer. They can be removed with the powerhead in place. You will need gaskets for both of the plates. If they're heavily deposited, you may want to soak them in Saltaway to soften up the crud.

reload,
The hotter an outboard runs the more efficent it will be.
If the stream of water coming out is warm to hot it is not necessarily a problem. If the water stream coming out is steaming(ie:you can see steam coming off the stream)you MAY have a problem.I emphasize "may".If you can hold your hand in the stream for any length of time, without getting burnt, then  .Since the water pump was changed last season I would not be overly concerned with that area anyway...

Are the exhaust cover plates on the port or starboard side? I think what happened is my son got in some shallow water and kicked up dirt from the bottom. Th dirt was sucked in and caused some clogging. I don't think it is from salt water deposits.

Also a mechanic at a boat yard in St Michaels says the water coming out of the pee hole should be the same temp as the water the boat is in.

I'm confused!!

Paul
