This thread may be redundant but I could'nt find anything that pertained to my problem. My first boat and my first problem. We were on the lake. The motor fired first pull but I did'nt let it warm up. Started it again and idled around awhile, it did great. A couple hours later we had worked our way out of the no wake zone. I decided to see what she had. I wound it up and all was well, let off and continued putting up the lake. It started making a funny noise and quit. After paddleing awhile a fellow saw us and towed us the 2-3 miles back to dock. THANK YOU GUY!. Anyway the starter rope would'nt budge. When I got home I pulled the rope assembly off and it turned with a wrench..ok...back to the lake but it would'nt start. what now? Pull the head off the motor? I don't have a compression gauge but it feels good with the pull rope. Any suggestions?

It may have overheated and the piston seized in the cylinder, then after cooling down it loosened up enough to turn. Best to pull the head off and check cylinder walls for scoring or damage. Also drop lower unit to inspect the water pump. Good Luck!

Still have'nt found any numbers. I took the lower unit off. I found the impeller. It's about 2 1/4" with curved fingers. Another plastic box further up the shaft has a wee little thermostat in it. Now I need to find where to find those parts.

It wouldn't turn over at the lake, but would it turn over at home with the pull start assy installed? Are you getting spark to the plugs? Are you getting fuel to the carb? If this is a "Force" Gamefisher 9.9, I've had fuel and spark problems with my 7.5 Gamefisher that is basically the same as a 9.9.

A couple things that should be done as preventative maintenance, install a fuel pump diaphram kit and replace the impeller. I would also check for spark as depending on what ignition you have the points/condenser/coils could be bad or if you have electronic ignition the BIM coils could be bad.

For a redneck compression test, put your thumb tightly over (over,,, NOT IN) the plug hole, pull the engine over and see if the compression blows your thumb off (figuratively speaking) the plug hole. This won't tell you how much compression you have, but it will confirm compression, and if 1 cylinder is stronger than the other you have an indication that one cylinder could be low.

It passes the redneck compression test. :) I'm at the point where it's just a matter of finding the right impeller. I put the thermostat in water on the stove, it opened at about 90* give or take. Searching the store here there's all kinds of impellers but no measurements. Could this motor be a mercury?

Allright! I found and ordered the parts. It's a chrysler/force. 20.00 for the impeller kit.

I was going to tell ya but you seem like the kind of fella that needs to investigate things on his own...happy boating:)

Allright! It's in there and pumping water like crazy. Now I have to replace the quick connect for the fuel line. I've found it (here) but the picture does'nt show a barb on the male/engine piece. Am I to assume it will be on there? I only need the o-rings but I'll replace the both since it's out. Part #'s 18-8062 and 18-8071.

Re: 9.9 Gamefisher lockup

Well, I've had the boat out 4 times with good luck. Last Sunday we were out and all was well on short runs. Coming back in at about half throttle for say half an hour she started cutting out, missing I should say. Could this be plugs, or maybe water in the fuel. I'm taking the granddaughter out tomorrow and would like to cure this problem. I'm hoping the motor is'nt shot from the overheat.

EDIT; erroneous information
-------------------------------------------

Can you see or feel the pee stream while running, how hot? should be like hot coffee if it has a thermostat, much cooler if not

Re: 9.9 Gamefisher lockup

Thanks mrcrabs. Sometimes research takes a man around corners when you don't have the numbers to the product. I'll have the honey pick up some new plugs on the way home. I'll check the thermostat temp. Have'nt done that yet. Not knowing the boat yet it's kinda scary leaning way out there. I'm 50 and learning everyday.

ps. mrcrabs is that like...m r crabs.. m r not.. o sar..lib..... mrcrabs. :)

Oh crap its me thats wrong, Pay no attention to the spark plug numbers I gave you, they are for the Tecumseh built 9.9...sometimes the thread goes on so long with out mention of the model number I forget about the force built models,
check www.sparlplugs.com for your correct plug .

Sorry, and no I did think you were a smart *****....but I feel like a dumb ***** lolololo
