hopeing for so good advice. 9.9 gamefisher 1994 model 225-581-996 serial oeo36251. first time out it started with a shot of starter fluid and then ran great. after about 4 min it started to bog down then died. about this same time I started smelling rubber burning and the motor appeared to overheat and would not start back up. after about 20 min it started up ran good till i got back to dock (about 4 min again and had the same prob. I tried to start it in my yard and it poped a couple of times then nothin. there is a fair amount of oil in the barrel so it is pumpin oil out the exhaust. I checked compresion and one is 90 the other is 95 I have spark and fuel but will not start. the therm was not there when i opened it up so that is not the overheating prob. I am going to replace pump. what else could be causing the overheating and the failure to start now?

Hello,<br /> Have you checked the plugs? Check to see if they are wet with oil if so clean them. Or try a new set of plugs making sure they are gapped correctly.

Do me a favor and check to see if you have spark on both cylinders... One might only be firing. That would be the cause of excess gas and oil it is unburned so it will appear more. Ill chekc hte gap for you give me a few minutes. Thanks

Re: 9.9 gamefisher ovrheating/ not starting

new dilemma, I got it started and it ran great. I decided to change the water pump. When I pulled the drain plug for the lower unit I got about a table spoon of clear water out then slowly some coal blake oil came out but not much. The fill screw was only finger tight so the water may have come in there but I am not sure. Have I done damage and how do I know?

Depends how long the water was in there. If you drain it and refill with gear oil you should be fine. make sure you change the drain screw gaskets

Change the impellor and thermostat. That should fix the overheating.

DMilne - The water pump & thermostat should do it but if not don't give up. You may have to pull the head & exhaust cover and scrape out the salt water crud that can build up in the water passages. Get new gaskets if you have todo this.

I am in the pro. of changing the impeller, and when I opened the therm. cover there was none in place. What is bugging me is the burning rubber smell I was getting. I just don't know if an impeller that is pumping water would cause that much smell.

Thanks for all the help. I changed the impeller and housing and lower seal. The impeller was in pbad shape and it was the burning smell I was having. She runs like bath water even after 40 min of running. I still have a rpm loss problem. At first it runs great and puts me up on plain then after a min or two the rpms drop back and i am just putting along. Souns fine no missing just no top end. Could this be power pack. and how do I check it? still need to buy that maual since i don't know where to even find the pack.
