Hello everyone,

I have a '74-75 9.9 evinrude outboard. The wheel that the pull cord turns isn't interlocking with the larger one that gets the engine turning. I'm wondering if this has happened to anyone else and what they did to fix it.

I'm going to get a new smaller wheel for the pull cord as soon as I get the money, and am hoping that'll take care of it, since the one on there now looks worn down. If anyone has any suggestions as to what else I may try, it'd be greatly appreciated. I've already tried tightening the bolt down a bit, but too far and it doesn't rise and turn at all.

Thanks for your help,
Dan

Well, you may need some new parts. But, have a look at the pinion gear and the shaft it rises on. Is there grease and stuff on them? If so, clean it all off. Lots of folks make the mistake of greasing those manual bendix-style starters up. That doesn't work. The pinion can't rise to mate with the gear if the shaft and the pinion are sticking.

Once all the oil and grease is off there, try it again.

Also, you need remember to pull the cord out a few inches until the starter teeth engage the flywheel before you rip on her. Many people just grab the rope and rip her as hard as they can, and this behaviour is what destroys your starter.
