Hi, Really struggling with this one. I have a 9.9 mariner serial number 9528860 pre 1993 I am told. It wasn't pumping water well so I changed the Impellor and seal kit now it is pumping only fumes I have checked out what I did and the only thing I could see was the water intake tube seal was bent over slightly but I would have thought that should still pump some water? My next thought was that I had a crack or the baffle plate was cracked so stripped that down and the cover for the cylinders (sorry not sure what it's called) and can't see anything either. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

thanks in advance.

Just another thought. When I had the bottom end off I used a hose to pump water through to check for blockages it came out of the tell tale and I had no water coming back through the exaust.

Could this be picking up fumes from the exhaust if the water pipe is blocked?

Remove the lower unit and insure that the impeller is engaged with the key. Either turn the drive shaft clockwise and feel the impeller rubbing on the bottom plate or remove the pump cover and visually inspect it.Make sure the water tube going to the powerhead is seated properly. Remove the water tube from the water pump and insert it into the intermediate housing. There should be an alignment hole there to guide you. You will feel the tube go into the grommet on the bottom of the powerhead when it is seated properly. Insert a drinking straw into the water tube and blow air in making sure you have air coming through the tell tale. Remove the straw. Put a small flashlight and one of the mounting bolts or nuts close to the lower as you are pushing the lower unit up to the intermediate housing. As the lower unit gets to within a 1/4 inch of the intermediate housing shine the flashlight on the water pump to make sure the water tube goes into the grommet properly. While holding the lower unit with one hand install the bolt or nut to the hold the lower unit up not allowing the water tube to disconnect from the powerhead or the water pump. Reinstall the remaining bolts or nuts to secure the lower unit. Sorry about the long reply but I learned this the hard way. Hope this helps.

Thanks KS I will go back over it and check it all again but suspect I still have a problem as I was certain I have the connection correct. Maybe the pipe at the top though :).

To check if the tube is in the bottom of the block properly, just put the garden hose on the end of the tube, with the leg removed, and verify you get water out the telltale.....

You are aware that with that engine you won't get any water from the telltale until the thermostat opens....

Some 9.9's had an optional thermostat (as did the 15's). Any chance yours does?? If it has a thermostat, it will pump fumes (slightly) for up to a min or so untill the thermostat opens. Water then dribbles out for a bit before becoming a steady stream.

Thanks folks, Yes it does have a therm. The problem I had initally before I changed the impellor was that it never pumped a stream of water just sort of spluttered. Could it be the threm isn't working properly if so is there any way to check?

Cheers

Check it the same way you check a car thermostat.. Thermometer and thermostat in a jug and bring up the temperature.... It should be open at about 140 degrees....
