I just bought an old (1970's vintage) merc 9.9 HP outboard. It is impossible to move the throttle unless the shift selector is in Forward. is this a design "feature" or is something Kaput?

Thanks,

Don
Re: 9.9 throttle locked out in neutral and reverse
It was a design feature to prevent over-revving under no-load and light load conditions, Skooks.

There may be an adjustable stop screw to adjust it to allow a little bit of throttle.

Good luck.
Re: 9.9 throttle locked out in neutral and reverse
If you had blown up an engine by putting it into thermal runaway under no-load I think you would feel differently, Skooks.

It's a plumb terrifying experience.
