Saunday I bought a 9 hp Sea King. It is a model numberVWB27909B X86. Serial Number X86 10241. I can't tell wqhether the X86 is the serial or model number.
Question #1: What year is this, an "86/
Qusetion #2: Is this made by Johnson or Chrysler?
Question #3: The air cleaner is missing. The Carb is set up for a 3-screw mount air cleaner. Are there air cleaner assemblies available, or should I go to the motorcycle/lawnmower shop and see what I can adapt?
Question #4: I am going to order a manual when I Know which model and year. Until then, WHat should I grease the lower unit with? The stamping says "grease", so I just remove the zirc female from my gun and fill it full of marine grade grease?

I have a Evinrude 90 hp circa 1995 that is very thirsty for oil. I mean it EMPTIED the 2 gallon oil tank on less than a tank of gas! Also, blue smoke that you cannot beleive. I know nohing about this motor. I have ordered a shop manual. But before I get too into it, is there a chip or brain that sets the oil/gas mixture? This boat is in Baja, in the middle of nowhere. I have to take all my parts down, so if it is a plug in, I'd like to take something with me. I could't locate anything that looked like a maual adjustment in that engine. There was a lever, but it didn't do anything that I could tell.
I'd hate to drag that boat all the way up to San Diego, so I hope it's something minor. Any suggestions or encouragement would be appreciated.
RG

On the evinrude it sounds like a bad oil injection pump. It would seem to me its injecting to much oil into the motor. That would be where I start looking

icepick,

Your Sea King may have never had an air cleaner. Most outboards do not. Some just have a silencer.

The 90 sounds like it has a bad VRO pump. Or, it may have a leak in a line somewhere.

I would arm myself with a new VRO pump. Or, you can disconnect it and run pre-mix 50:1.

Hi Icepick
Your Seaking 9 or 9.2hp (I have it listed both ways, same model)is a 1968 model. It was made by Chrysler. Fuel mix is 50:1,the gearcase uses 90wt gear oil, not the type of greese your thinking of. Outboards don't use air cleaners. As Djohns states some use an air silencer, sort of an intake muffler. Your model never had anything attached to the carb intake. If you look closely you will notice that the hole at the bottom contains a choke detent. A plunger and spring.
As for the Evin, I agree with the others. You will need to have a serious look at the VRO system.

Thanks for the prompt replys. 90 weight gear oil I got (left over from my VW days.
But if I disconnect the oil pump and run 50/1 (a great idea, won't I have to do something to let the engine know that the oil tank isn't empty?
I mean, when I ran it dry the engine shut down. Is there an overide?
RG
