Always nice to take a test ride. Listen to the engine as it moves through the throttle range. Should be smooth all the way up.
Ask for any maint history on the engine and any known problems with the engine. Might even take the engine to a reliable wrench for a going over.....spark test, compression test, if the owner is willing. Might turn up some problems the owner don't know (or may know) about.
