Hello.

I'm a bit of a novice here and I'm considering purchasing a Chris Craft 177. I'd be interested in any comments any of you might have regarding this boat. Here's what I know:

1990 Chris Craft 177 19' Bow Rider.
Rebuilt 4.3 Mercruiser stern drive.
Currently in use and running strong.
Bottom is coated with a protectant and it is currently wet docked.
It has a new starter, trim pump motor & prop.
Looks good but needs some minor upholstery work.
Appears to have a good cover and trailer.
Will be inspecting it first-hand on Thursday.

Here are my current questions/concerns:

Are there any major concerns about stringers, transom rot, fuel tank leaks or other structural things to look for? This boat has had the bottom painted so it has likely spent quite a bit of time on the water. What things would the board look for and stay away from?

Thanks.

Jeff Warner
Galloway, OH

Excellent info, thanks. Is this information from specific experience with one of these boats or are you speaking in general terms regarding this type of boat? Is the wood exposed at these locations? Will a soft floor actually feel soft underfoot or do I need to tap on it or something?

Thanks again.

does it come with a trailer? when I bought my boat I was a first time boater and I didnt look at the bottom of the boat and see the crappy patch job the previous owner did to a hole. Check the underside for damage. Pretty much anything can be fixed but its nice to not be surprised with something.

You should be able to tell if there are any soft spots by just walking and maybe a little hopping around the floor. There should hardly be any flexing or give. Check the engine mount for rot too. You must look at the bottom of the boat out of the water. Look for blisters, cracks, or damage. I could go on and on about stuff to look at, but the 3 most important things are the floor, hull, and engine. If these 3 things check out I would say go for it and get yourself a boat!

Excelent info Phil, Thanks a bunch. The boat will be on it's trailer when I look at it so I will be able to get a good look at its hull. Thanks again.

Jeff
