Wow! just read the other clifton's post, have a similar problem. I just put a new engine in my 90 renelle 4.3l. I have a chattering noise in the drive in neutral only. The previous owner had his repairman replace gimble and the bellows . I have this chattering noise , like a dry throwout bearing on an old chevy pickup. I have all winter now to fix if problem. I do not like noises, but wondered if there could be something about an old drive, like the spline shafts having a little slack in them or something minor like that. I am fairly acustom to the mercruser alpha 1 drives, as I have replaced the gimbles, and bellows, and have the alignment tools for that operation, and the nylon driver for same, as was told tools are the same, but not sure, hope someone sharp at this has some direction, as I think the mechainc who did the previous repairs may not have been at his best also. Funny you mention a Chevy's throwout bearing. My 98 S-10 is chattering like hell!

Is the chattering from the transom area or lower in the drive?

Better pull the drive and take a look at/grease the u-joints and gimble bearing. This should be done annually anyway. Your alignment bar will work just fine for the OMC.

Pull the drive and check the alignment, it'll be out from the engine change. Also check the bearing when you have the drive off.
