Hi there. I wanted to post this issue for some feed back. The picture name rude 2 shows the area (in the red box) where it appears the water leak in coming from. Picture rude 1 is for reference so you know where you're looking. This is a 1987, 90 horse evinrude

Now, I am not sure how to fix this or even where the water is coming from exactly as it all pools there and trickles down the right hand side (looking at pic 2). Is this as simple as umbolting the power head from the ouboard and changing the gasket?

I used the motor like this all last season, put on about 10 hrs or so.

Re: 90 evinrude water leak

You have marked the bottom of the outer exhaust cover as leaking. If water is coming from this cover, it is a simple fix. You will not need to pull the powerhead, but will need two (they are the same gasket) exhaust cover gaskets. If it is leaking below this cover, it could be leaking in the seal between the powerhead and the midsection adapter-called the base gasket. In this case, you will need to pull the powerhead to replace the gasket.

Re: 90 evinrude water leak

so I removed to exhaust covers today. The gasket (outer one) seemed to be cracked at the bottom right at a water jacket passage. It's Victoria day today in Canada so it's a stat holiday and everything's closed. I will order some new gaskets tomorrow. When fitting the new gaskets, is it recommended to put any type of adhesive, marine adhesive? See new picture of exhaust area.

What type of sealant should I be using on the gasket mating surfaces for the exhaust covers, if any?

I've had some folks recommend that black gasket making compound made by permatex. Is that OK?

You will need simple gasket sealer, like a permatex type. It's the dark brown type applied with the cap that has the brush built in. The bolts are small, so they only need 5-7 lbs of torque. I'd retorque them after the engine has gone through it's first heat/cooling cycle.
