90 force? Is it the stator or rectifier?

My 90 force has quit running. I have been told that it is the rectifier that has gone out. My battery quit charging and the tach quit working. But the engine did run when that happened. Now it just won't run at all. Is it the stator or is the rectifier the problem. OR is it both of these.

Have you tried charging the battery with a charger and then starting the motor? The rectifier charges the battery while the engine is running. If you can charge the battery and get the motor running then it should run till it draws enough voltage from the battery where the motor will kill. IF that is the case I would agree it is the rectifier.

Your ignition uses AC voltage and the rectifier converts this voltage to DC to charge your battery. Even the best rectifier in the world will still have a little AC ripple riding on the DC. This ac ripple is what your tach sees in order to determine your RPM. This may be why your tach quit working. Your motor will run as long as you have enough juice in your battery to keep it going.

thanks for the info. Yes I have put in a brand new battery just to make sure that i had enough juice to make it fire. The motor will spin over very fast but won't fire.

Checking the rectifier is simple to verify if it is good. Most have four leads: Red, (black or gray) and two yellow. Using a ohmeter set at 1K, connect red lead (ohmeter) to red wire, then black lead to yellow #1 (doesn't matter which). then move black lead to yellow #2, they should be similar. Then switch black lead to red wire, and red lead to yellow, you should get no ohms at all. If you get continuity both ways, you need to buy a new one. let me know, I know some good prices on these, from $69-$169, you just have to shop around.
