i have 1986 90 evinrude vro minus the vro pump i removed it. I did a decarbon on my motor a few weeks ago with some seafoam. And the past two time i took my boat out it takes me forever to get it started. when i first put in it acts like it is flooded i have to open the throttle wide open then choke it and start and it take probably 9 to 10 tries before it starts up. once warmed up it idles fine it runs wide open like a champ if i shut it off then start it right back up it starts fine but if i let it sit for a minute or two i am right back to trying to get it started again. Could it be dirty carbs? or an air leak? I just dont know since it runs so good once started? Any ideas?

you have a primer solenoid, rather than a choke. have you tried starting without choking, sounds like it is flooding. also red lever should be i the run postion, in line with the body of the solenoid. like this:

Re: 90 hp evinrude trouble starting

i had the same motor different year, start by pumping bulb, tilt all the way down, in neutral, idle lever all the way up, turn key to on push in on key, holding key in turn to start. if it does not start, release key and try again. once it starts you may have to bump key in a couple of times to get it to settle down, lower fast idle lever. you also have to have a fully charged battery these motors have to turn +-300 rpms in order to start.

Clean the nipples on the carbs, that the primer hose connects to.
