I have a 90 hp force I think its a 1991, I know its been over heated and maybe has more issues. my question would a fairly intellegent person be able to use the manuall to rebuild this unit. can it be economicall for a diy type of guy? Witch repair manual brand is best?

Depending on the extent of the damage you can absolutely rebuild it yourself! First things first though, if you can check compression this will tell you whether a rebuild is in order. As for a manual well... you may get alot of mixed opinions here. Clymer is ok, but just wait, some kind soul may chime in here with a free downloadable manual ;)

I was surfing youtube for some info and came across a download "free" it said but ended up being a crock. I have checked the compression don't remember the numbers but the bottom cylinder was somewhat grim, and the middle cylinder was so so. I am somewhat new to bigger than row boat size, so when I bought this boat I didn't see that the overtemp circuit had been disabled. didn't even know there was an overtemp circuit. I don't think it would be to bad rebuilding, as I am an industrial electrician and am allways building or repairing some piece of s_ _ t or cutting edge technology. I am more at home with old school stuff.

Unless the engine is completely trashed it is almost always worth rebuilding if you do it yourself. Almost no special tools are needed--a torque wrench capable of 250 inch pounds and a flywheel puller.

For a couple of hundred max in boring charges and anywhere from 250-400 for pistons you can have a complete rebuild.

Repost when you decide to rebuild and you can get detailed instructions for disassembly and reassembly. You can also use the search function and study previous threads on this topic.

I personally find rebuilding to be very emotionally satisfying and still get a rush the first time I start a rebuilt engine in the driveway.

Disassembly outside is going to be more difficult because you will be wearing gloves and heavy clothing. And at this time of the year you will need some brass balls--uh, Christmas ornaments. Other than that, not much effect. Some bolts may be corroded a little and may need heating anyway. Once you get the block off the leg, it only weighs about 100 pounds. Bring it inside to finish disassembly.

I get timed out on here all the time. Next time it happens, if you are not redirected to log in, go advanced. That should give you a log in window without losing your data. If that doesn't work, then write part of it and post, then edit a couple of times to finish.

that helps!

I have to get a manual, I like to study things first, helps with making simple mistakes, and less note taking.

As Frank said, its completely manageable for one guy. I have done two rebuilds now, and have to agree totally with Frank, it is literally a high upon that first lighting! Just take your time, take pictures, label parts, read read read, and when in doubt ask the folks here for help. The only hard part may be finding someone in your area to machine the block.

I feel dumb, my motor is more likely a 1991 I have a serial #oe 002759 but no model #..how do I find the model # using the serial #, haven't had any luck yet. I don't think it will stop me from getting the right repaire manual. witch brand repaire manual would be best for a total rebuild? can I get a book specific to my motor or are they all pretty much inclusive of many years and models?
