90 HP ignition problem

My father has a 90 HP Mercury outboard that we believe to be from 1984. We are having trouble with the wiring harness where it plugs into the engine. Most of the time the ignition works fine but if the harness is moved slightly the engine will not fire. Is there a way to trace where the lose connection is, be it one of the fingers where the harness plugs into or on the harness itself. We have tried to spread the finger apart and have cleaned them, but the problem continues. How can we know for sure that we need to replace the harness or where it plugs into the engine.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

Re: 90 HP ignition problem

It sounds like the black wire with the yellow stripe is shorting to ground. This is the wire that the ignition switch sends to ground when the switch is turned off. It's also the wire that goes to ground when the kill switch is pulled.

c/6

Hooty
