90 HP Johnson V4 Low Power

Hello,
I have a problem with my 1984 90 HP Johnson. It starts and idles well, but the last few times I've had it out I can't get it above 3,500 rpm and it is only going 25-30 mph on a Starcraft 16'. It used to hit 45 mph and have lots of power. I cleaned both carbs recently (no hint of any dirt, etc.), I verified a spark on all 4 cylinders (at idle), I just installed 4 new original spec champion spark plugs and I have done a compression check with 118 - 125 psi on all cylinders. The engine will gradually slow, sputter, then regain some power but I would say it is never running above 1/2 the power it should have. I inspected the fuel filter and it looked clean (I know I should replace it anyway). All spark plugs look the same after running - some blackening on the side electrode and clean center electrode with one side of the ceramic all clean. I am running 50:1 premix - the VRO oil pump is inoperative but I have never properly disconnected it - I am looking at doing this but I don't think it's my problem since I have had full power in the past with the same setup. One observation is that the fuel squeeze bulb is not hard (but not collapsed) while engine is running WOT. I took off a fuel line to the carb and manually sqeezed the bulb - lots of flow with no restriction. Sorry for the long story, but I thought the details may be useful. Thanks in advance - great forum.

Kenpars

Ken,

You are losing a cylinder or two, or you are starving for fuel.

Do have have an inboard tank (fuel)?

If so, try running it with the fuel filler cap loose.

Replace the fuel filter. If no luck, it's time to rebuild the carbs.

The fuel tank is a portable unit - I'll definately try the cap trick. I actually removed and disassembled the carbs when I cleaned them. All the jets and other passages were very clean and definately not blocked. After reading a few more semi-related postings, I am suspecting that the fuel pump diaphram might need to be replaced.

Thanks

Ken
