Have 94 Sea Rayder with 90 HP Merc Sport Jet and have a few questions.

1) Does this engine charge the battery?
2) What kind of fuel consumption should I expect?
3) Does fogging the outside of the engine with WD-40 cause any harm. I do this to prevent corrosion.

Concerning fuel use, I get about 1 hour continuous use at WOT with a full tank of gas (16 gallons). I get about 2 hours with normal slow/fast use.

Thanks, Ken

Re: 90 HP Merc Sport Jet Ques

Ken, I'm a outboard guy, but I'll take an educated guess until someone else shows up. I would say:

1. Yes it charges the battery

2. The rule of thumb for outboards is 1 gallon per 10hp per hour. My old Johnson V4 crossflow burns about 7-8 gal hour at cruise (3/4 throttle) I've been told that jets aren't as effecient, so I would think that your milage would be a bit less, but 16 gal every 2 hours seems way high to me, but I'ne never seen the engine you have.

3. I spray the powerhead of my OB (which I think is what your powerhead is, an OB head on a jet) with silicon lube every so often as it isn't as flammable as WD-40, but the WD-40 won't hurt the motor unless you really soak the electrical connections and such. You can get the silicon lube most anywhere, Wal-mart, NAPA, etc.

Hope this helps until someone corrects me or fills in the blanks.

Thanks for the input.

I have another question. Does this engine have a water pump or is it cooled via the jet drive.

Ken

Of that I haven't a clue. I would "think" there is a pump somewhere, but I couldn't even begin to guess where it would be.

Yes, Ken.. it is cooled by water diverted from the jet drive....16 gal an hour does seem a little high, but these things are way thistier than a 90 outboard....

Yes, that is about what my Sport Jet 90 burns at WOT. I have found that if I reduce the speed a little I can get better mileage. Last time out I got about 1.8 mpg, according to my GPS, but this was mainly at WOT.

Scott
