90 HP Rude hard cold starts

Hi,

I have a 1984 90HP Rude. I just installed 2 carb kits, hoping to solve this problem, but it didn't. Also cleaned fuel filter, replaced all the 2 cycle oil, & 4 new spark plugs. When I put the boat in the water, drop the motor and try to start it, it gives me 10 minutes of grief.

The motor turns over fine, and fires up, but dies immediately. Here is the procedure I use:

1) Squeeze the fuel primer bulb until hard.

2) Turn and push in on the key to activate primer for 15 seconds, before first attempt to start. I hear the click from the primer solenoid ok.

3) Lift the throttle lever 1/2 way

4) Turn key and listen to motor pop and then die.

Repeatedly play with throttle and key primer for the next 10 minutes, as the motor starts, runs a few seconds then dies.

As the motor is barely sputtering, if I raise the throttle lever fully, the motor will not rev up beyond 500 RPM. It just sits there and coughs and sputters until it gets warm. Then it will slowly increase in RPM.

After 10 minutes of this, the motor runs mint. The throttle lever will now raise the RPM's big time, maybe to 4,000. I can then start and stop, no problems once it's hot. Even after being shut off for an hour, it still starts right up. Seems like trailering the motor in the up position kills it.

Where is the choke on this thing ?
:(
Any ideas ?

Thanks,
Paul

What could be wrong here ?

Paul your starting procedure is basically correct. My 87 110s spit & fart for a while till they decide that it is time to go - not as bad as yours though.

At this point I would do a compression check and check spark with a spark testor - should jump at least 1/2" with a snap & bright blue spark. We can go from there.

What plugs do you have installed?
You said you are using 2 cycle oil - Which exactly?
What do the plugs look like when this occurs?
Have you done a linc & sync with the carbs?

Oh and by the way your key primer serves as a choke - there is no choke like on a carbed auto.

Well guys, here's what I think. You may be flooding the thing holding the key in for 15 seconds. See....the primer gets its fuel from the fuel pump. When the primer is pumped up solid, you have pressure up to the pump and primer. Holding the key in does nothing but squirt gas into the the reed cages until the pressure of the bulb is depleted. Try it without holding the key in for 15secs. Turn the key to on and push in and go for start.

Re: 90 HP Rude hard cold starts

The spark plugs are the correct number, as the Ken Cook manual says. When I removed the 4 of them while doing the service work, they looked ordinary dark and had carbon.

I don't have any way to do a compression test, but wouldn't the fact that it runs mint when hot rule this out ?

I really feel this trouble is fuel related and not spark. Although I did not test for this either.

On another trip, I also tried to start the motor without pushing the primer key for 15 seconds. I had the same results, with the sputtering, etc...

I don't know how to sync up the carb's, but when I rebuilt them, they both seemed to work in unison.

Is this helpful info ?

Re: 90 HP Rude hard cold starts

I forgot to answer the last question. I am using the expensive Evinrude 2 cycle oil that sells for $22 a gallon at the dealer.

Never again though, I saw it at Walmart for $6 a gallon ! ;)

Well, I'll tell ya', I got a 86' 90hp Johnny that fires first time and idles smooth. No farts, barks, sneezes or gags. Tink, take a look at the throttle movment when you put the cold start lever up. This should open the throttle plates a little. This helps it start cold. It is possible ya' need to do a sync and link to get things back to even. It's all laid out in the service manual.

Oh and by the by....I got Boyesen Reeds in mine. Makes a difference. :)

Clean the primer hose nipples located on the carbuators, if this doesnt solven problem, drill the hole in the nipple larger by about .020.

Does anyone have an electronic copy of the procedure to do a sync and link on the carbs ? I ordered the Ken Cook manuals, but the service manual is not available from them, for this year motor.
Thanks,
Paul
