I just bought a bay boat a 2005 90 hp Yamaha 2-stroke. I took it out today for only the second time and the guages did not work at all. The engine ran fine with no alarms or other problems but the guages never tried to work. Is there a particular fuse or a reset that I need to check. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Thanks Drewmitch,
I dont see any model numbers on the guages. There are two seperate, the tach which also has the trim and oil level and the speedometer which also has the fuel level.

Re: 90 hp Yamaha guages quit working.

Got a picture of any of it? Gaguges or controlls. Im only asking cause rodbolt seems to be a expert on these yamaha motors. He helped me out more than a couple times, directally and indirectally as i read some of his posts and did not even have to ask cause i found the answer from a previous post he posted. When my gauges quit working it was because the charging system on my 115 yamaha was not working. He diagnosed that. It got it fixed pretty easily. Good luck!!

Re: 90 hp Yamaha guages quit working.

cool
standard 6Y5 stuff made after about 2002,704 premium binnicale and yamaha keyswitch.
between the keyswitch and the guages is a harness about 4ft long, this harness has a red, yellow, black, green wire ends.the yellow female bullet next to the blue male bullet is for guage lights on with keyswitch.
make sure the yellow and blacks are plugged into the yellow and black sockets on the guages.
if a yellow or black falls out from the keyswitch you lose all of it.
red is constant power and keeps the speedo memory, yellow is key on 12V,green is tach send and black is ground.
there is also a 20 amp fuse in both the yellow and red wires on that 4 ft harness.
if the fuse at the engine was bad you would have no power at the switch and no cranking, concentrate between the switch and guage package, bet you will find it.

drewmitch
you have helped many folks, meincluded.
an expert? not really.
yamaha says I am a master tech and they got my pic posted on the yamaha tech website but I am just a lowlife tech that happens to be passionate about what he does.
but not expert status.
I have done this work a lot longer than I care to admit.
also programmed and set up CNC lathes and mills with a 6 Year break as an FC in the USN.primary NEC was 1121. CIWS .
was medically retired in 95 and worked with boats ever since.
so no I am not an expert, just a guy with an occasional memory and a passion to be the best and aid others when possible.

Re: 90 hp Yamaha guages quit working.

Rodbolt and Drewmitch you guys are awesome. The guages are working!!! but I am still confused. I traced the harness down and found the fuses. The fuse on the red wire came apart when I seperated the fuse holder so I dont know if it was blown or if it just broke apart when I pulled on it. I replaced it but still had no power to the guages so I started retracing my steps. As I said this is a new boat to me. I took it out a couple times and it worked well. It only had one battery on it so I put another one on it to split the cranking from the accessories like bilge, aerater,ect...The next time I took it out no guages. Soooo I connected everything back to one battery and presto guages work again. I would still like to use two seperate batteries. Am I missing something ? Reguardless I sure appreciate yall taking the time to help me out. Thanks

most likly ya split the grounds, with 2 batteries both negative terminals MUST be bonded with a wire of a guage not smaller than the largest ground cable.
when you added tghis battery, did you add a 3 position switch?

That makes since Rodbolt. I did not bond the batteries. I sure appreciate your help. Someone that takes the time to help someone he has never met is a good fellow in my book. All good deeds get rewarded sooner or later. Thanks, Vic
