i just looked at a 90 hp yamaha (1997) that the owner said ran good. being ct. the boat was full of snow and had nobattery in it. i pulled the spark plugs and they were a little rusty. compression was top to bottom, 0,50 125. the owner acted suprised and said the rings were stuck from sitting. upon closer inspection i found a hole big enough to put my truck key in right next to the top spark plug hole. i pulled the head off and water came out of one of the bores and head gasket was roted and surly blown. pistons were tight in bores with no scuffing or other evindence of overheating. i could buy this motor for 300.00 and pick up a head and put it together but sort of afraid to take a chance. how does anyone burn or blow a hole right throuh the head into the chamber? this was a salt water motor but looks ok with no corrosion or hot spots on powerhead. thank you, keykev................

Run, don't walk

The 14 year old motor is worth almost nothing due to the damage and likely internal saltwater corrosion.

Dear Captain....thank you thank thank you. I told my husband the same thing - only he wouldn't listen to me. After all, I'm only the first mate...with 9 more years boating experience, I might add. Now...for his response......thanks cap, your right, the salt water for sure made right to bearings.

I love these engines, so I know its hard to walk away, but I agree, run.

This is the part that irks me...some poor sap coulda been taken by that idiot...

The lower unit could be worth $100 or so...

Your post is going to help many. I got the deer fever with ours, but lucked out big time with minor fuel issues, but big headaches.

IMHO you dodged a never ending repair bill.
