I just started getting a stuck wide open accelerator trouble. I have a Hotfoot, connected to a 200HP outboard 1990 Merc. The engine starts normal and runs normal at first. Once I accelerate to get on plane the motor will not slow down(hold on tight). I have to trim the boat all the way down to maintain 35 and kill the engine to stop. When I restart the motor it races. No matter how much I hit the peddle it will not back off. After the boat runs about 5 minuets it goes back to normal on its own, and responds to the hotfoot normally.

Any ideas on what would cause this? The choke maybe. It did start when the weather got down to around 60-50 degrees.

You may have dirt in the cable housing. I'm not to familer with your set up but if it were on a carb set up like a car I'd say your return spring is missing or streched

Yea, So you're saying that the hotfoot is stuck, frozen at the time the trouble appears? Sounds like you need to replace the cable... Check the throttle linkage also...

poseidon,Are you talking 35 MPH when this happens?

Neither a choke or a carb float can do this.Sounds mechanical for sure.Mybe the outer housing of the cable is worn out somewhere along its length.

DHP

It does not apear to be the hotfoot cable. It seems more like a float or choke. I'll double check the cable.

No, it is as SLOW as I can make the boat run when it happens.

I found the trouble. I turned out to be the one of the three small fuel lines going to the top of each carb. The line to the lower one was flexing just enough to get caught in the Throttle linkage after priming and or choaking the motor and opening her up. I put a tie wrap on the line to hold it in place and it is now working fine.
