i bought a boat/motor from a friend. he blew the head gaskets on both cylinders. he replaced them and flushed the motor out thoroughly and didn't run it for 2 years. I broke it loose and have re-built it for the most part. i replaced the thermostats and took the water distribution plates off the heads and they were solid with salt. replaced all of that stuff and cylinders felt surprisingly smooth, no scrapes or gouges. i havent finished and started it yet but i was wondering if blowing the head gaskets originally could have done any damage i may not see. what do you guys think??

You probably won't be able to tell much until you get it back together and do a compression test. If your rebuild included rings & pistons you will need to break it in as if new. If compression is then OK most likely you'll be fine.

Replacing the water pump??
