Unidentified freakin' outboard ! My tag plate is missing from the tilt bracket and all I have to go by is the Welch plug (freeze plug ?) It has a "M" stamp at the top and number across the middle A0311178. Is anyone able to decipher this or point me in the right direction of someone who can ? Thanks if you can help. I've tried to upload some photos but can't. Happy to email photos to anyone who wants to see the motor.

You could try BRP customer service at 1-262-884-5993, give them that # and maybe they could help you out.

Thanks for your quick reply boobie, however I'm way down under in New Zealand so phone calls may be out of the question. I might see if I can email their customer support team though. Thanks for the pointer.

Re: 90hp Johnson "UFO"

i think it started life as an evinrude as well.
its definitely been re-painted/sprayed.

if you look on any of the pastic parts they will have the year on the inside of those as well.
it will be like a little clock with an arrow pointing to year i.e 8 or 7 etc.
you can also have a look on the starter motor for the model of starter and the same with a few other parts.
always try and look for when a certain model year came out, then see if you have those parts if not its the one before etc.

Re: 90hp Johnson "UFO"

If im seeing those pics right, the powerhead and inner lower motor cowl appear to be painted silver......assuming that's original, its a hint that this is actually an Evinrude from the 80's......it also appears to have a VRO pump fitted which would mean it was produced somewhere between 1984 and 1988.

With those colors my guess would be between 1987 and 1992.
You may want to check police reports for stolen engines, stolen engines often come up for sale without the tags.

Re: 90hp Johnson "UFO"

The colour looks identical to my 1988 90HP Evinrude.
Looking at the BRP website it seems 1988 was the first year with the VRO2 oil injection so it could be worth checking that out.
I believe you can tell the difference between VRO & VRO2 by the colour of the fuel outlet.
From continious wave...
The VRO2? was introduced in 1986 and included a "NO OIL FLOW" alarm. Changes included an electronic circuit to compare the oil pulses with the engine's RPM, a better oil pump piston, alcohol resistant seals, and a brown fuel outlet for recognition.
Strangely that seems to contradict the BRP website with regards to when the VRO2 was introduced.
(BRP says 1988 yet CW says 1986)

Good luck.

Re: 90hp Johnson "UFO"

Thanks Fed, that gives me another lead to follow. If it makes any difference I think I read somewhere that a 3 wire vro stopped at some point and then a 4 wire vro was introduced. Mine is a 3 wire... does that help ? Perhaps mine might be the last of the 85/86 era (3 wire) then the 4 wire (86+) was introduced with the extra "no oil flow" circuit ? Cheers

Re: 90hp Johnson "UFO"

I would agree it's probly an '88. Thought I had a pic around here, naturally can't find it. Doubt it's much newer cuz in '89 or so they changed the gearcase a lil. The 6 exhaust holes above the ventilation plate became two horizontal slots. It is not an '84 -'86 btw, difrent paint/decal scheme.

Re: 90hp Johnson "UFO"

The 1988 had exhaust slots (not 6 holes) beside the anode so it has to be 1987 or earlier.

If you're correct with the paint scheme V153 (remember it's a repainted Evinrude) then it can only be a 1987.

Re: 90hp Johnson "UFO"

I dont believe it is correct in reference to a repainted Evinrude.....could still quite possibly be slightly older than an '87......i agree it is not from '88 though.
