I tested it at the battery just to make sure my voltmeter was not off. Is this normal? Can I
do anything about it? I don't think it was dong this a weeek ago.

Un-regulated systems will do this with a fully charged battery. Turn a few things on like Nav. lights and what ever you have and see if the voltage comes down. Make sure you keep the battery topped off with distilled water.

Could clean connections, check wires, voltage is directly related to resistance. Checking the accessories as Captain Trent advised is a great idea, if the voltage jumps as a given circuit is energized thats the circuit to begin cleaning.

Re: 90hp Mariner putting out 17 volts to battery

Thanks for the reply guys, I think my wires are ok. I did replace the stator a month ago and
can't help but think that may have something to so with this. The battery is full of water and
I have even unhooked the wire to the tach. (which has not worked since I got the boat).
Please read my post of 8-6 for the full story. Anything else I can try?
