90HP starter problem

Have a 1996 90HP when using starter it makes loud racket as if it is jumping in and out of contact with starter gear on flywheel. What could be causing this? I have sent for a manual in mean time I am in the dark on this engine.

Need more info. Has it always done this or did it just start? How long have you had the mtr? How does the mtr run if you get it started?
