good morning boating fans,
i have a 2004 merc 90hp 2 stroke. i purchased it new 4 years ago and so far the engine is running fine. i thought how ever this spring i would have the engine looked at. i change the plugs yearly. my question is do engines need some sort of "tune up" annually? and if so what should the mechanic do to the engine?

thanks,

Re: 90hp tune up question

For the longevity of a engine it should have it's maintance which is outlines in most owners manuals done as required. If you don't care that the engine lives as long as possable and runs as well as possable, then it's not worth doing.

TT - These days with the electronic ignitions we have, very little scheduled tune up stuff is needed.

Make sure you change the gearlube at least annually and lubricate the grease fittings and steering tube and other linkage points and moving parts on the motor. Use a fuel stabilizer in the fall to preserve the gasoline's freshness, change/clean the fuel filters and as long as it runs well, you do not need to take it in.

Water pump should be on a scheduled maintenance, perhaps every other year unless you run it a lot, or have accidentally overheated it.

If you have a crankcase pulse fuel pump, it's a good idea to put a kit in it every year or every other year. Low fuel delivery is the main reason for melted pistons.

hope it helps
