Hello everyone. I know this topic has been covered many times, but I still have not found the info I'm looking for. It's an 87 johnson j90tlcur. Not charging and the Tach works randomly. I suspect that it's the stator, but would like to confirm for sure before replacing it. I'm looking for info on how to properly test it. I've read that ohming it is not reliable? What's the proper way to test voltage? I've read that you should have a dva adaptor which I'm not even sure what that does? The girl at the local Marina told me you can test without the dva. Can someone please enlighten me? Thanks.

I should add that I did try to test the stator yesterday. Removed the two wire that go to rectifier. Checked for ac volts across both yellow stator wires and the meter showed OL. When checking each wire individual to ground, the numbers seemed a little random, but had about 7vac on each

More likely regulator rectifier. Cdi electronics .com has a trouble shooting guide.

The charging system is what provides the tach the info, not the ignition system. Follow Jake's recommendation and look at the rectifier.

Thanks guys. I'll have to take a look at that trouble shooting guide. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought that the stator had two sets of coils. One supplying the ignition cicuit and one supplying the charging circuit? I have to admit, my focus on the stator is mostly a hunch at the moment. Last year I replaced the rectifier because I had no charging and the Tach did not work at all. It was a used one so it could be faulty, but after replacing it the Tach started working but it is erratic. I had been thinking the Tach was faulty until I realized it wasn't charging. This is why I'm looking more at the stator. I also suppose it's entirely possible that the stator went bad first and possibly caused the rectifier to go.

Check that the tack + tilt/trim plug is making good contact. That may cure the tach issue, especially if you are also seeing intermittent issues with the tilt/trim at the throttle, but not at the buttons on the engine itself.

Its a zero cost thing to look at.

When the rectifier starts to go, it can cause the tach to be screwy. There are many types of tach issues/problems, all of which can be attributed to a faulty rectifier. Tach is intermittent, tach quits at high rpm's only, etc, etc. I'd certainly be scrutinizing the rectifier before I jumped into the purchase of a new stator.

In my humble experience repeated rec/reg failure is usually operatpr error. Mainly dirty battery terminals, old corroded cables and always wingnuts. Wing nuts should be illegal.

Thanks guys. I decided to take it to a guy near by and have the charging system properly tested. It has the water cooled rectifier, so both the stator and rectifier are fairly expensive parts.

Jakedaawg, I don't think I would say the battery connections have been loose or dirty, but I have quite a number of wire connected right at the battery. I hate that and would like to do something about it. I've probably got 5-6 wires on both +/- I've wondered about mounting some kind of terminal block that all those smaller wires could connect to, but haven't found anything appropriate for doing that. Any suggestions?
